The big news for iPhone users was the release of the iPhone 2.0 software upgrade (see the review on page 11) and the introduction of the iPhone 3G (page 9). The iPhone 2.0 software adds the ability to connect to Apple’s new App Store (page 53) to download and install third-party software on the device. By the end of July there were over 1,000 being offered in the App Store, relating to business, ?nance, productivity, travel, sports, games, and more. Best of all, over 20% of these were free. So if Apple’s phone isn’t smart enough for you, there are now plenty of inexpensive or free ways to raise its IQ. There’s another way to make your device more functional. Built into every iPhone and iPod touch is Apple’s Safari Web browser. It’s not only incredibly easy to use, it allows you to access a host of online Web applications. For example, you can access online news, RSS feeds, take notes, convert voice recordings to text, search for recipes and local movie times, ?nd a person’s phone number and address, and much more. There’s nothing to install here—it’s all accomplished online using Safari. For more on , check out the articles in the Web section, beginning on page 60. 
Ultimately, the iPhone is only as smart as the person using it. We didn’t have to look very hard to ?nd a number of smart professionals who use the iPhone to enhance their business and personal life. They include a CEO, mayor, IT manager, rabbi, physician, student, and ?tness expert. Check out their stories beginning on page 81.Finally, one of the biggest criticisms of the original iPhone was that it wasn’t a very good device for use in businesses. The iPhone 2.0 software changed that, with its ability to install third-party apps and its inclusion of Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync.
